Spring has a full schedule for a Very Busy Couple

For residents Warren Haddon and Corrie Triewth spring is a very busy time. As the ground thaws they bundle up and venture out to the Creamery Brook community gardens where they get a head start by employing some of their best early gardening techniques.

A visitor to their garden in March would see a lovely clump of green chives, black plastic warming the soil, special water-filled plastic tents to protect young plants, and a mini greenhouse constructed of plastic pipes and plastic sheeting.

Another unique feature one would notice is the series of vertical posts that run along the garden. These posts were constructed by Warren to aid Corrie with her gardening chores. Corrie has limited agility due to a stroke and the posts help her increase her mobility in the garden.

In addition to the full schedule that a garden can impose, Warren and Corrie have an active artistic lifestyle. They head-up an Artists Workshop on Saturday mornings. The workshop is usually held every other week in the Community Room and all levels of talent are welcomed. The participants usually discuss a central idea or project to get their creative juices flowing. Maybe just a single word, like “snowbirds,” is enough to get everyone thinking “like an artist.”

Just as with the gardening, Corrie’s artistic abilities were effected by her stroke. She and Warren ran a business for many years, designing and creating cards and Corrie painted the card’s artwork using her right hand. After the stroke she had to learn to paint with her left hand. Although she is not as agile with her left, her sense of style, color and design are still evident in all of her recent creations.

Warren and Corrie are not alone in their love of gardening and art. Take a look at the photo accompanying this article of last year’s gardens and you will see that there are plenty of green thumbs at Creamery Brook. And the photos on page one are evidence of the creativity and skills that are present in our community.
Whether a resident is an avid gardener, a seamstress, an artist, or has been unable to continue such tasks due to the limitations of age, our sense of community and exchange of ideas are what keeps couples like Warren and Corrie thinking, creating and growing.
